Ashwagandha Root Extract can help reduce stress in senior patients

Progressive veterinarians are always on the lookout for safe, effective interventions to improve the quality of life of their geriatric canine patients. Fortunately, the results of a recently-published study, using KSM-66 Ashwagandha root extract, reveal that this adaptogenic herb can do just that — mitigate age-related issues in geriatric dogs, including reducing stress.

This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial explored the clinical potential of ashwagandha root extract (ARE) and its immunomodulatory effects on healthy senior dogs.

Study Design and Methodology

The randomized, double-blind study, which looked at the immunomodulatory effects of Withania somnifera, also known as ashwagandha, involved 20 apparently healthy dogs aged 8 years or older. The subjects were divided into two groups: one receiving KSM-66 ARE (15 mg/kg, once daily, orally) and the other a placebo control. Various parameters were assessed at the study’s initiation, day 30, and day 60, including serum cortisol levels, hematological profiles, biochemical markers, antioxidant indicators, and anti-inflammatory responses.

Hematological and Biochemical Improvements

The results were groundbreaking, showing significant improvements in several key areas. ARE treatment led to increased erythrocyte count and hemoglobin levels (p < 0.001), while decreasing leukocyte count (p < 0.05). Notably, important markers of liver function (ALT, AST, albumin, and globulin) and kidney function (creatinine and BUN) showed significant decreases (p < 0.001) in ARE-treated dogs compared to the placebo group.

Antioxidant and Stress-Reduction Effects

One of the most intriguing findings was the modulation of oxidative stress markers. ARE intervention significantly altered levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione, and malondialdehyde, indicating strong antioxidant effects. Furthermore, serum cortisol levels were significantly reduced (p < 0.001), suggesting a potential stress-reduction benefit of ARE in geriatric dogs.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

The study also revealed significant anti-inflammatory effects of ARE. Key inflammatory markers, including interferon-γ, tumor necrosis factor-α, nuclear factor kappa-B, and interleukin-10, were significantly decreased (p < 0.001) at day 60 compared to baseline levels. This finding clearly suggests that ARE can help in managing chronic inflammation often associated with aging in dogs.

High margin of safety and neutral taste for better patient compliance

Of course, safety is always a consideration when including any ingredient in a treatment protocol. Recent veterinary research into KSM-66 Ashwagandha has consistently shown a remarkably benign safety profile, with no negative reactions observed among the animal subjects. When administered appropriately in terms of preparation, composition, and dosage, it is a safe remedy with no adverse effects.

In addition, patient compliance is made easier since KSM-66 has a neutral taste, which makes it an ideal candidate for incorporation into various edible and potable formulations, foods, and beverages.

Clinical Implications for Veterinary Practice

For veterinarians, these findings open up new possibilities for managing age-related changes in senior canine patients. The adaptogenic properties of KSM-66 Ashwagandha, as evidenced by improvements in hematological and biochemical profiles, enhanced antioxidant defense, stress reduction, and modulation of inflammatory responses, posit it as an emerging must-have intervention for geriatric dogs, especially for:

  • Stress management
  • Blood cell production
  • Inflammation control
  • Oxidative stress reduction.

In addition, the multi-faceted benefits observed in this study suggest that ARE is a promising integrative approach to supporting the well-being of not only senior dogs but also other canines, offering veterinarians a potential new tool in their efforts to maintain and improve the health of their canine patients.
