Discover what science says about using antioxidants to promote feline and canine ocular health and why veterinarians across the country recommend OcluVet.

Cataracts remain a major cause of visual impairment in dogs and cats. From subtle lens changes to mature cataracts associated with vision loss, surgical removal remains an established option for appropriate patients. However, interest is also growing in approaches that help support lens health by addressing oxidative processes associated with cataract formation. Read on to learn about the evidence behind using antioxidants for feline and canine ocular health and to manage cataracts.

The Role of Oxidative Stress in Cataract Development

The crystalline lens is vulnerable to oxidative damage. As it ages or undergoes pathological changes, an imbalance between reactive oxygen species and antioxidant defenses can contribute to:

  • Protein modification
  • Lipid peroxidation
  • Loss of lens transparency

This has prompted investigation into antioxidants as a potential means of supporting the lens environment. Among the compounds studied is N-acetyl carnosine, a derivative of the naturally occurring dipeptide carnosine. Its antioxidant properties have made it of interest as a topical approach to managing oxidative processes within the eye.

Examining the Findings of a Preliminary Study in Dogs

A 2006 study featuring 30 dogs evaluated a topical antioxidant formulation containing 2% N-acetyl carnosine, glutathione, cysteine ascorbate, L-taurine, and riboflavin. The dogs had a range of lens changes, from nuclear sclerosis to mature cataracts, and received the topical formulation three times daily.

Across the 58 evaluated eyes, mean lens opacity decreased by approximately 2.3% overall. The changes were statistically significant in eyes with immature cataracts and nuclear sclerosis. Mean reductions in opacity were approximately 4.5% and 5%, respectively.

Clinically Proven Antioxidant Support for Feline and Canine Ocular Health

OcluVet Eye Drops for Pet Eyes with Cataracts provide veterinarians a proactive approach to supporting ocular health, comfort, and long-term function. For more than 15 years, OcluVet has used science-backed antioxidants to create a non-invasive approach to help address the effects of oxidation, aging, and glycation. The preservative-free formula features a powerful antioxidant blend with 2% N-acetyl carnosine, L-carnosine, L-glutathione, vitamin C, cysteine, and riboflavin to support the eye’s natural defenses and help protect crystallin lens proteins. In clinical trials, more than 80% of patients demonstrated a measurable reduction in lens opacity.

OcluVet also offers Vision Chews, made with QRILL™ Pet Antarctic Krill and formulated with omega-3s, choline, and astaxanthin. Beyond eye health, these nutrients provide whole-body support for healthy brain function, joints, heart, immune function, and skin and coat.

Whether you’re looking for targeted ocular support or daily nutritional support for lifelong eye health, OcluVet provides veterinarians with science-backed options designed to support feline and canine ocular health, comfort, and quality of life.
